Dr. Dean Befus, PhD, is a Professor of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Alberta and Director of the Alberta Respiratory Centre. He is a Research Leader of AllerGen’s Biomarkers and Bioinformatics Enabling Platform.
Dr. Befus focuses on finding new therapeutic treatments for asthma patients when their airways become inflamed by an asthma trigger, such as moulds, pollen and dust. His research focuses on the cooperation between mast cells and airway epithelial cells in host defence against influenza A; and on the neuro-endocrine-immunologic network in inflammation and stress. As Director of the Alberta Respiratory Centre, he has broad interests in asthma, ranging from its management to the development, implementation and evaluation of education programs for adults and children, their families and health care professionals.
